Reading
Phonics scheme
At Western CE Primary we teach phonics using our own scheme, 'Western: Sounds Matter'. Phonemes are taught in a progressive sequence that enables our children to access reading whole words at the earliest opportunity. Letter/sound correspondences are introduced using cued articulation to draw the children's attention to the way each sound is produced. Phonics lessons are daily in years R and 1 and engage the children using stories, actions and images generated from their own ideas.
